Ngorongoro Conservation Area and the Crater Highlands, Northern Tanzania Safari
The abundant caldera of the Crater is the centrepiece of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, which extends over 8,000 square km of lush, rolling highlands with smaller craters and lakes that may be explored at leisure by vehicle or on foot. This region, roughly the size of Crete, forms an important part of the northern Tanzania safari circuit.
The Ngorongoro Conservation Area is unique and important in that its aim is to preserve the wildlife and the traditional lifestyles of the tribal pastoralist people who are allowed to continue their way of life here. These are predominantly Maasai peoples, who move seasonally through the Crater Highlands and, although they may not inhabit the crater itself, they continue to take their cattle to the fertile crater floor to drink and graze.
The People of Ngorongoro
Over 40, 000 predominantly Maasai pastoralists inhabit the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, and this provides a unique African safari experience in which it is possible to witness these statuesque herdsmen wrapped in their red shuka cloth grazing their cattle alongside predators and prey. For this double consideration, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area has become a World Heritage Site and earned Biosphere Reserve status.
Nearby, to the west of the Crater in the eastern Serengeti Plains, is Olduvai Gorge, an archaeological site famous for its fascinating fossil sites, specifically the earliest known examples of bipedal footprints. This historic site is thus considered 'the cradle of mankind'.
