Ngorongoro Activities - safaris, walking, bird-watching and exploring
The most obvious activity from the Crater Lodge is actually getting down into the Ngorongoro Crater for pure safari action. As with all Tanzanian Northern Circuit safaris, regulations insist that vehicles must be closed-sided, but they do have pop-up roofs.
Further recent regulations limit visitors to just one safari into the Crater each day, either as a morning or afternoon game drive. This is a frustratingly short safari window, but does ensure a more enjoyable, less crowded experience.
The Ngorongoro Crater, while the highlight of the experience, is the centrepiece of the much vaster expanse of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, the rolling highlands of which create a fantastic area to explore on guided walks and drives. This is the domain of the Maasai pastoralists, and a stunning area of natural beauty to explore.
All Safaris from the Crater Lodge are guided by expert rangers, who are also able to explore the phenomena of the surrounding area, including the ancient sands of Olduvai Gorge, site of the earliest known examples of hominid footprints, often called the ‘Cradle of Mankind’, and a strange, rather random sand dune known as the Shifting Sands.
These excursions and bird-watching trips around the rolling expanse of the Conservation Area are usually carried out as half-day trips subject to vehicle availability.
Optional Alternative Activities and Private Safari Lunches
Optional activities at an additional cost include walking on the rim of the Crater or in Empakaai Crater, and visiting a cultural Maasai family settlement, called a boma. You may also take trips to enjoy sundowner drinks with spectacular views over Lake Eyasi, excursions to Lake Ndutu and arrange various private bush breakfasts and lunches.
